PhD im Bereich Biochemie und Molekularbiologie

The objective of the PhD program is to prepare investigators for an independent research career in which the concepts and methods of biology and chemistry are applied to biological problems. The PhD students chose their research adviser from among members of, or affiliated with, the Natural Science Faculty and Medical School. Students are required to choose 6 ECTS units advanced courses, seminars or a workshop in a laboratory environment (EMBO, FEBS, Cold Spring Harbor) as it fits their backround and interests.

A PhD degree in natural sciences is prerequisite of most professional carreers in biomedical research and development as well as in academia. At present over 80 % of the biochemistry students terminate their academic studies with a PhD. All PhD students are supported with a stipend of CHF 3'450.- - 3'950.- per month for a maximum of four years. The PhD program requires that each student in return fulfill around seven weeks per year as non-paid teaching assistant in undergraduate laboratory courses and help supervising bachelor and master students.

To qualify for admission, applicants must hold a Master's or equivalent university degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or chemistry. In special cases the program administration may require complementary courses.
