Professor Robert Häner received his chemistry diploma in 1983 and his Ph.D. in 1987 from the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zürich, under the supervision of Prof. D. Seebach. After postdoctoral studies at UC Berkeley (1987-1988, Prof. H. Rapoport) and the California Institute of Technology (1988-1989, Prof. P.B. Dervan) he worked as a research scientist at Sandoz Pharma, Basel. In 1992, he joined Ciba (Central Research Laboratories), first as a group leader and then as head of the section Nucleic Acids (1996). From 1997 until 1999 he was responsible for nucleic acids research in Novartis Pharma, Basel. In 2000 he became full professor of organic chemistry at the University of Bern.
